Teaching

As an educator, Hailey has experience teaching all ages and ability levels. 

 

Previously on faculty at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, she specialized in teaching vocal improvisation and music theory, and coached the Femme ensemble, an inclusive jazz combo showcasing the work of female and non-binary musicians.

 

Hailey also has experience teaching in classroom settings, having taught in classrooms from Kindergarten through high school. Her educational philosophy is student-centered and emphasizes creativity and collaboration.  She holds teaching certification in the state of Pennsylvania.

 

In addition, Hailey is an experienced clinician having worked with The Kimmel Center's "Jazz 4 Freedom" program, as well as with the non-profit organization Jazz Lives Philadelphia to bring jazz education to classrooms throughout the city of Philadelphia.  She was also a featured clinician in the 2020 National Jazz Conference with her workshop A Melodic Approach to Scat Singing.

Brinnel holds a bachelors degree from Temple University in Music Education with an emphasis in Jazz Studies.

  • ​A Melodic Approach to Scat Singing

    • Clinic will focus on making the transition from singing a melody in the jazz idiom to basic improvisation.  Using a defined 6-step method, an aural approach to improvisation is emphasized to making scat-soloing more easily accessible to young learners or those without a strong theoretical background.

  • Getting Out of the Method Book and Harnessing Student Creativity: Integrating Improvisation & Composition into Beginner and Intermediate Band Programs.

    • Clinic will focus on the successful and integration of improvisation and composition into band programs with incremental sequencing and curricular scaffolding to harness student creativity starting in their first band lessons.
