TEACHING

As an educator, Hailey has experience teaching all ages and ability levels. 

 

She is currently on faculty at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she specializes in teaching vocal improvisation as well as coaching the Femme ensemble, an inclusive jazz combo showcasing the work of female and non-binary musicians.

 

Hailey also has experience teaching in classroom settings, having taught in classrooms from Kindergarten through high school. Her educational philosophy is student-centered and emphasizes creativity and collaboration.  She holds teaching certification in the state of Pennsylvania.

 

In addition, Hailey is an experienced clinician having worked with The Kimmel Center's "Jazz 4 Freedom" program, as well as with the non-profit organization Jazz Lives Philadelphia to bring jazz education to classrooms throughout the city of Philadelphia.  She was also a featured clinician in the 2020 National Jazz Conference with her workshop A Melodic Approach to Scat Singing.

Brinnel holds a bachelors degree from Temple University in Music Education with an emphasis in Jazz Studies.

Clinics, Masterclasses, and Workshops

  • ​A Melodic Approach to Scat Singing

    • Clinic will focus on making the transition from singing a melody in the jazz idiom to basic improvisation.  Using a defined 6-step method, an aural approach to improvisation is emphasized to making scat-soloing more easily accessible to young learners or those without a strong theoretical background.

  • Learning the Blues

    • Clinic will address historical/cultural context of The Blues and provide strategies for improvisation focusing on aural concepts.  Emphasis will be placed on learning the basic blues form, idiomatic concepts in blues soloing, and creating a narrative solo arc.

  • Student Songwriters: A Modern Approach to K-12 Instruction

    • Clinic will show K-12 music teachers how to integrate songwriting into a band, orchestra, or general music setting.  Strategies will focus on utilizing aural skills and non-traditional notation to encourage students to find their own compositional voices.
